Just as the Crusades were to "save" the "heathens", Napoleon invaded Egypt. Just as Britain "liberated" Iraq in 1917, the US "liberated" Iraq in 2003.
The parallels are scary.
The troops were told that they would be welcomed with flowers and song. The insurgency after the liberation leads to bombing of Fallujah, a prominent cleric is sought, prisoners are taken to a foreign country and abused, terrorists are suspected of crossing the border of Syria, and British Troops cannot leave as it would cause instability leading to civil war.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
Five years later, an alliance with Britain is signed.
Eight years later, elections are held and concessions to international Oil Companies are made.
A treaty is signed, thirteen years after invasion, with Iraq seeking independence; it takes three years.
Another war with Britain in 1941 over control. Britain ensures that pro-British government is formed.
1954, the USA gets involved in the political instability in the region.
1967, the six-day war infuriates Iraq, looking toward the Soviet Union and away from the West.
1972, nationalization of the Oil Industry.
1974, Kurdish groups fight Iraqi government - and receive aid from Iran.
1975, Iran stops aid to Kurds.
1979, Saddam Hussain becomes President.
1980, Iraq invades Iran.
1981, Israel bombs a nuclear reactor in Iraq
1982, Iran leads a counter-offensive, reclaims most of the land Saddam took.
1988, cease fire between Iraq and Iran.
1990, invasion of Kuwait.
...this doesn't end here.
